How to make butter at home

It takes about 5 minutes with an electric mixer.  A little longer by hand or shaking it in a jam jar (great activity for children)

What do I need?

Method

Whisk the cream until thick and then carry on whisking until the cream separates into butter and buttermilk.

Wash the butter or place in a bowl of water to squeeze out the remaining buttermilk.

Dry with a tea cloth or muslin to get rid of all moisture.

Add salt if you wish and shape into rectangle and store in greaseproof paper.

How much butter does 600ml of cream make?

Well that can depend on the brand of cream and the fat content.  You can expect to make between 300-400g of butter and 250-300ml of buttermilk.  Store in the fridge.

Can I freeze butter and butter milk?

Yes you can.

What can I use buttermilk for?

You can use buttermilk for making pancakes, scones and bread.

Is butter expensive to make?

Depends on the brand of cream, currently it is cheaper to make your own rather than buying butter.  It tastes better for sure!
